the new iPad: naming genius

Several blogs and technology pundits have lambasted Apple for the horribly undescriptive and indistinctive name "iPad." At first consideration, I absolutely agree. In fact, as I purchased my new iPad this past Saturday, I carefully watched the Apple store employee to make sure she selected the correct one.
Then, the genius dawned on me. Its obvious that Apple has drummed up enough press, and enough interest that the product launch (and lines) were going to get plenty of press. It was going to be more press than the enhancements perhaps deserved. What is more clever than suffixing the device's name (3, 4G or HD)? Getting every newscaster, blogger and author to highlight the distinguishing features with every story!
- The new iPad: the one with the high resolution display
- The new iPad: the one with 4G connectivity
- The new iPad: the one with the faster processor/graphics
This strategy is genius because the features aren't compelling the press, but rather, the press is highlighting the features! It also puts pressure on everyone with an "old iPad." Its lowres, its slow, its missing 4G, it has no camera. If you didn't upgrade to the iPad 2, then its definitely time for the new iPad (the faster one with 4G and high resolution display).
I was surprised to find plenty of stock at my local Apple store on Saturday morning and no line! Taking it as a sign, I bought a 32GB Verizon version. I picked the right version for myself, but I suspect that the WiFi only version is the right choice for many. For me, I use the iPad every day, several times a day. I use it heavily during travel (weekly train trips to/from Manhattan) and on every flight.
The WiFi only iPad paired with a MiFi (portable 3G/4G access point) or ideally, an iPhone with tethering is a great alternative. Not having WiFi tethering option, I'm exciting about the Verizon 4G offering for the following 3 reasons: Verizon coverage in the US, WiFi tethering included in all iPad data plans, LTE support, and international SIM support.
