Hover.com - DNS

Herbert and his extended has tried out a variety of services for establishing a web presence, screwing around, and putting together simple projects. Amazon EC2, Hurricane Electric, 1and1, Google Apps have all been parts of the puzzle.
Currently Linode is a key piece of the Herbert infrastructure. One obvious piece of glue for an online presence is Domain Name Services. Herbert uses Hover for domain registration and DNS configuration.
Keeping DNS and Web Hosting Separate Herbert cannot recommend highly enough the value of keeping Domain registration separate from your webhosting. While its often more convenient to buy a domain while setting up your webhost, you get "locked" in. Much better is register your domain separately and setup any Webhost or VPS or other platform with the "Bring your own domain" option which using involves configuring an A (Address) or CNAME (canonical name) record which is trivial. When you have a better option, you can set it up and just change the DNS records when you are ready to switch. So much better than having to move your DNS at a later point without your webhost getting shutdown.
